The Simpson & Co. Story

The story of what was to become Simpson & Co. began a long time ago. My first taste of business came when I wasn't more than 5 or 6 when I helped my grandmother, Hannah Elliott, at her store, "Mrs. Elliott's Rug and Gift Shop". She was in business for over 30 years selling gifts, notions, and handwoven rag rugs. It was on her Union Rug Loom (which I still have) that I learned to weave and started on my fiber adventure.

In 1975 I was visiting my parents and we were cleaning out my grandmother's house when I saw her loom sitting idle and forlorn. As no one wanted it, I took it with the idea of making a living selling handwoven rugs (yes, I'm a dreamer!). I will never forget the first time I set up that loom, it seemed to take hours and I thought I would go crazy, but I stuck with it and wove my first rag rug (which I still have). The year 1975 slipped into 1976 and I had a chance for a small retail space in a friends store. I set up my loom, bought some weaving supplies and went into business as David E. Simpson, The Weaver.

My Grandmother Hannah Elliott holding 5 month old me. On the left is my Great Aunt Mary, who when ever I asked her to read to me, which was often, would set aside what she was doing and would take me up in her lap and read. My grandmother taught me the love of business and fiber, my aunt taught me the love of books. I was and am blessed!
