About Looms

Choosing a loom can be a difficult experience as there are many types to choose from. The following information will help you to choose the type of loom that is right for you. We thank Leclerc Looms for providing this information.

Counterbalance Looms

Counterbalance_Diagram.gif (13667 bytes)In a counterbalance loom, the threads (in normal position) from the front breast beam to the back thread beam are in the center of the heddle eye and reed.

When shafts one and four are pulled down by the action of one or two lams and treadles, shafts two and three automatically move up, from the action of the lower rollers, giving a large, clean shed.

Advantages:
- Large, clean shed
- Effortless treadling
- Good system for rug making when high pressure is needed on the warp
- Easy treadling because you have to attach only the shaft you want to lower
- Less expensive than other systems

Disadvantages:
- You are always limited to 4 shafts
- It is always more difficult to have a clean shed with an uneven treadling such as 3 shafts against one. The shed regulator for the Leclerc counterbalance looms helps but is not perfect.
